About 75 scientists representing the national accelerator-driven  transmutation of radioactive waste effort held their quarterly technical  review meeting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  The national program  titled "Advanced Accelerator Applications" is managed by the U.S. Department  of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology.  The lead  laboratories are the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Argonne National  Laboratory.  UNLV received a $3 million research grant last year and $4.5  million this year to support the research effort through faculty-supervised  graduate student research.  The UNLV program currently supports 21 graduate  student assistantships and a roughly equal number of undergraduate  researchers.  The national research and development effort is only a couple  of years old and the latest progress in technology development was presented  at the two days of meetings.  The event was capped off with a tour of the  Yucca Mountain site.  The university programs had an opportunity to make  oral presentations to the group and 18 posters were displayed at the Student  Poster Session (see picture).
